Top 10 New York City Experiences

NYC is one of the best cities in the world because of its culture and energy. The variety of experiences is unparalleled anywhere else in the world. If you’re looking for excuses to visit or unique things to do, these are my personal top ten experiences since I moved to the city.

1. Summer Day at Rockaway Beach

Taking the ferry to Rockaway Beach, grabbing a sandwich at the local deli and watching the surfers (and dolphins/whales if you are lucky!) is a surprisingly perfect summer day in the city.

2. A Night on Governors Island

Governor’s Island opened this summer at night for the first time. Exploring after-hours makes the experience even more special. Grab a drink or spend the night at Collective Retreats.

3. Candlelight Concert

An incredible experience in a historic church, only lit by candles. Concerts take place on a weekly basis, with music from the most renowned composers and tributes to the best contemporary artists.

4. Grand Central Tour

One of my favorite tours I’ve taken in NYC involves the history and all the secrets of Grand Central. The stories are fascinating and you’ll leave with a whole new appreciation for, not only the terminal, but the city itself.

5. Holiday Walk on 5th Ave

NYC in December is on another level. It is festive and everyone is outside admiring the trees, decor and window displays. Outdoor holiday market pop-ups and ice skating rinks are everywhere and the (spiked) hot chocolate is flowing.

6. Bryant Park

Bryant Park is an evolving hub for activity. During the winters, an ice-skating rink and lodge transform the space and during the summers, a stage is set for concerts and shows. For a true New York night, get tickets to a Friday night performance, bring a picnic and grab a drink at the Bryant Park Cafe outdoor bar after.

7. Sunset Trapeze

A most memorable evening of learning to fly, with the sun setting along the Hudson River in the background. In an hour and a half, you’re ready to let go and “catch.”

8. New York Botanical Garden

New York City’s most impressive “living museum” is acres of incredible gardens, forests and water features. Their exhibits are jaw dropping.

9. Hudson River Bike Ride

Grabbing a Citi Bike and biking the Hudson River Parkway is a local’s best unkept secret. The path is paved and a straight shot so that you can be in Harlem in no time. A stop at The Baylander for a beer and lobster roll is the perfect reward. On the Brooklyn side, biking through Dumbo, Brooklyn Heights and into Red Hook is warm-weather bliss.

10. MET Cloisters

Worth the subway ride north to Washington Heights, the Cloisters is one of the best museum outings because of the beautiful setting, architecture and artwork. During the fall, the walk around the surrounding park is absolutely magical.
