Get lost in the medinas
The old part of town is a maze of narrow alleyways, with something to admire around every corner. Get a fresh juice, mingle with a shop owner, take in the incredible architecture, doors, tiles and fountains — incredible craftsmanship can be found in the most unlikely of places.
Browse and haggle for souvenirs
The Moroccan medinas are ideal for authentic, one of a kind souvenirs that you can’t find elsewhere. Buy a painting from a local artist, fresh-out-of-the-tannery leather jacket or sandals, striking carpets or home accessories or treasured skincare – almost everything can be shipped! Be prepared to haggle and offer 1/3 of the price as a starting point.
Get Scrubbed at a hammam
On average, Moroccan men and women will bathe in a traditional hammam once a week to cleanse themselves and socialize. Water is a very important symbol of purification and cleanliness in Islam. It’s not the most relaxing experience but your skin will feel baby-soft after and you will likely have a story to share.
Seek out a madrasa, palace, kasbah or tannery
These are just a few landmark sites to keep an eye out for. Decide on one of each – most of them are similar structures so prioritize in different cities. Opt for the Chouara Tannery in Fes, the largest in the world but admire the tiles in the Ben Youssef Madrasa in Marrakech. Kasbahs are great stops on a road trip!
Take a break in a garden
There is usually a garden within walking distance of the chaotic medinas. Marjorelle Garden is the most famous but Chateau Perdicaris in Tangier or the Kasbah Garden in Chefchaouen are other examples!
Stay in a Riad
Not only does a riad look and feel special, but you are more likely to be treated like family here vs staying at a hotel. This is where you fully appreciate the character of the buildings and integrity of the locals.
Indulge in a nice dinner
Always opt for the local’s favorite restaurant but there are some incredible meals worth splurging on. Riad Fes, Royal Mansour in Marrakech and Triana in Chefchaouen are a couple of examples.
Check off all terrains!
The Moroccan deserts, mountains, forests and greens hills, and the coast are just some examples of epic scenery in the country. Take a day or multi-day trip to catch a glimpse of every day life beyond the touristy areas. Extra points when you discover the dream-like palm tree oases.
