Ticking off the “Mighty Five” National Parks in Utah is a worthwhile pursuit, but red rock fatigue will set in if you are just going to look at the views. Instead of being excited for a new park, it will feel like more of the same. Mix it up with some must-do activities within and around the national parks!
Rivers and Waterfalls
Take time to see the twisting Colorado River and the canyons that surround it at Dead Horse Point, just outside of Canyonlands. Or opt for the Narrows river walk in Zion, where you can walk in the Virgin River. Otherwise, Lower Calf Creek Falls is a great hike featuring a 126ft waterfall close to Canyonlands.
Kayaking
Lake Powell is an awesome spot for kayaking. One of the best side trips you can do while seeing the Mighty 5 is a stop at Antelope Canyon Marina, where you can rent kayaks to the famous slot canyon, Antelope Canyon. It’s a unique and fun way to see the natural attraction at your own pace and without the crowds.
Biking
Rent a bike in the nearest town to see a national park. Exploring Scenic Drive in Zion by bike, or even better e-bike, is a fantastic way to see the sights without the hassle of driving, parking etc.
Bar Crawl
Moab is the town located closest to both Arches and Canyonlands. Stay on the Main Street and you will be treated to restaurants and bars within walking distance to your hotel. Start with a dinner at Josie’s, then saddle up at the Spitfire backroom bar just a few doors down. From there, grab a drink at local dive bar Woody’s.
Hot Springs
Natural hot springs are hidden gems in the state of Utah. Mystic Hot Springs, Fifth Water Hot Springs, or the more resort-style Veyo Pool are just a few examples. Perfect for relaxing after a day of hiking.
Tours
Join a horseback riding group in Zion, take a stargazing tour in Bryce, or opt for the Canyonlands National Park tour by 4W with a local guide. And it’s a chance to make friends and hear new recommendations for your trip!
Sunrise or Sunset Hike
Make the hike an unforgettable adventure at sunset or sunrise. This will require some forethought and possibly a headlamp. Delicate Arch in Arches National Park is one of the top spots for a sunset experience.
Petroglyphs and dinosaur tracks
Roadside attractions can definitely be tourist traps but if you’re passing free ancient art or real dino tracks it’s worth a stop! Capitol Reef National Park and the town on Moab have options just off the road.
Canyoneering
The red rocks will look different when you’re repelling from them! Canyoneering is the process of descending a slot canyon that often involves ropes, rappelling, down-climbing and sliding. Locals recommend canyoneering in Zion for an adventure away from the tourists.
Sand Dunes
Coral Pink Sand Dunes is just 30 minutes south of Zion. The beautiful sandy dunes are a beautiful desert feature and welcome respite from the red rocks. You can also rent sleds or boards from the welcome center.
Snow
Take the trip during the winter! A fresh dusting, frozen water and snow-capped mountains will add a magical touch to the red rocks.
