I have a bit of an obsession with Alcatraz. It began when my parents introduced me to The Rock in middle school (prime time Nick Cage movie, 100% recommend!) Since then I have watched dozens of documentaries, visited the island 4 times and even applied for a job as a tour guide (made it to the 2nd round…they don’t pay very well!)
Alcatraz is an absolute must for those visiting San Francisco. The tours book out early, especially in the summer, so make sure to place it as a priority when planning your Bay Area activities. There are a couple hills and it can get chilly so another tip is to wear comfortable footwear and bring a jacket, even if it’s a nice day. If you have the opportunity, the night tours include special programs, tours, and activities not offered during the day. As a bonus, the mood on the island shifts and the history feels real when darkness descends!
1. The maximum-security prison housed some of America’s most dangerous felons from 1934 to 1963. You can tour the cellhouse, envision life behind bars and take the award-winning audio tour which includes firsthand accounts from both prisoners and correctional officers. However, life wasn’t so bad. The prisoners had their own cells, hot water showers, recreation time including softball, and allegedly some of the best prison food available.
2. Prisoners weren’t the only ones spending their time on the rock. This was the most surprising to me, not realizing that the guards and their families lived on the island as well. Their CHILDREN were mere feet away from the prison! The island had a pool, bowling alley and ballroom for dances, and children that grew up there actually called it an idyllic place.
3. The stories and the rumors continue to captivate audiences (me). Thirty-six inmates have tried to escape, most of whom were caught or killed. However, there are three men who were never found and there’s evidence to suggest they are free men living out their golden years.
4. The island is alive with birds, gardens and incredible horticulture. Once managed by military officers, wardens and prisoners, the Alcatraz Historic Gardens Project now works to preserve, rebuild, and maintain the gardens. The juxtaposition of the dilapidated buildings, exposed steel and metal corrosion peppered with blooming plants and flowers is a really cool and unexpected sight. Tours of the island gardens are offered twice a week on Friday and Sunday mornings at 9:45am.
5. The view. From the island you have an unobstructed view of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge and the city itself.
In conclusion, where else can you get unique history, a fascinating story and one of the most beautiful views? THE ROCK [said in a Sean Connery voice].
(This is in no way a sponsored post. That being said, if Alcatraz would like to hire me to be a spokesperson, count me in).
