Capitol Reef doesn’t get the credit that most of the other national parks do. Below are the six best reasons to add the park to your itinerary:
- It’s a perfect stopping point between Bryce Canyon and Moab (Arches and Canyonlands National Parks). It would be a 5+ hour drive if you go straight there so this is a good place to stop for the night and take a break.
- Check off the “Mighty Five” National Parks in Utah! Does it count if you haven’t spent time in ALL five parks?
- The road trip scenery is outstanding! Taking Route 12, or the Scenic Roadway, is a feast for the eyes. Sights include some incredible red rocks, the snow capped Henry Mountains and likely some majestic animals along the drive.
- Fremont and Ancestral Puebloan people lived here between 600-1300 A.D. and their engraved etchings into the rock walls survived. Petroglyphs are markings that tell their stories, hunting patterns, crop cycles and mythologies. On Highway 24 there is a stop with some pristine examples.
- There are some great shorter hikes and viewpoints. Hickman Bridge is a short walk from the road, Goosenecks Overlook is .2 miles with a slightly longer .8 mile walk to Sunset Point. If you’re in the mood for something longer, take Grand Wash Spur road to hike the 3 miles to Cassidy Arch or take the 4 mile Grand Wash Trail as an alternative.
- Get off the grid for a bit. This park feels in the middle of nowhere. The towns are small and the service is limited. Take the time to meet fellow travelers, take a walk or go stargazing.
