Underrated Places in New York City

Since moving to the city, I’ve visited some of the most popular attractions, but it’s the unusual, off the beaten path (or maybe hidden right in the heart of the city!) sights that seem to be the most memorable. If you’re a local or planning to visit, consider giving some support to these lesser-known places.

Wave Hill

Wave Hill is a former country manor given to the city as a public garden in 1965. Though often thought of as “hard to get to” it’s just a 30-minute drive from Manhattan or an upgraded BxM2 bus ride and short walk away. Here, you can roam and visit the two historic homes, the forest paths or the gardens at your leisure. Everything is well-kept and beautifully manicured, but it’s the view of the Hudson and Palisades Cliffs that will knock your socks off. The only thing that seems to be truly encouraged is sitting in one of the chairs and relaxing. After visiting, it’s also worth meandering through the Riverdale Historic District.

Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral

Locals don’t even know there is an Old St. Patrick’s! It may be overlooked given the plain exterior (fire and budget constraints), brick wall and overgrown cemetery, but the interior is stunning. Not to mention, the baptism scene from the Godfather was filmed here. But it’s what lies beneath the Cathedral that is truly what makes this place special: catacombs. To get special access and see the tombs and crypts, book a Catacomb Tour!

This is included in the Go City pass. If you’re visiting and want something special + all the go-to’s, this will save you time and money!

Morgan Library

Just minutes from the popular New York Public Library, the Morgan Library is unique in that it was the private library and art collection of Pierpont Morgan.  This means vaulted treasures, secret staircases and literary books that were personal to the owner and family.  The new building addition and exhibitions add a modern touch to an otherwise historic attraction.

Hudson River Sailing

I hear about the Hudson Cruises all the time: everything from a river tour, to a dinner or happy hour cruise. But it was only recently that I discovered sailboat tours. This is a more intimate experience. By the end, you’ll know the crew, the sailing commands, definitely the bartender, and probably the other guests. The route is different every time depending on the wind and conditions. There is no “best side” as you can see it all.

Fort Tyron Park

Fort Tyron is a park located in Washington Heights that often goes unnoticed unless you know what you are looking for. There are 8 miles of paths besides lawns, gardens and rolling hills. You’ll feel like you have been transported to Europe with the stone walls and bridges.  Add a visit to the Met Cloisters for the ideal afternoon.

Governors Island

Governors Island is a seasonal ghost town located just off the coast of Manhattan, Brooklyn and New Jersey. Its sprawling lawns, random art sculptures and abandoned buildings add a quirky element. Really it is the view that makes it worth the trek (if an easy 8-minute ferry ride can be considered a trek). There are food trucks and a couple restaurants so you won’t go hungry, but it’s also an ideal picnic destination. Pack some sandwiches, a bottle of wine, a frisbee and a good book and you’re good to go!

Aire Baths

The Aire Baths are located in the heart of Tribeca in what used to be a textile factory. Your stress levels will plummet the second you walk through the unassuming door and are welcomed by music, eucalyptus aroma and low lighting. The main floor is candle lit, with high ceilings, wooden beams and 6 therapeutic baths: hot bath, the ice and cold plunges, the warm pool, the floatarium (salt water pool) and the jet pool. The staff is all-business and will explain in hushed voices the suggested bath sequence to get the optimal benefits. Then you’re left to roam between the baths, showers and steam room. The level of pampering is up to you, as everything from massages to a red-wine bath is available.
